History

Biggby Coffee was originally named “Beaner’s” and was opened by Bob Fish and Mary Roszel in East Lansing, Michigan, in 1995. The pair was dedicated to providing a comfortable space and great products and was soon joined by their friend Michael McFall as a barista. In 1997, as the business was growing, the owners decided to open a second location.

It was in 1999 after the initial success of the first two locations that Fish, Roszel and McFall formed Global Orange Development, LLC., and began franchising the company. The first franchise was opened in Okemos, Michigan, in 1999. The second was opened that same year in East Lansing.

From 1999 to 2003, the company grew modestly and added a further 9 stores to the 4 they already had. However, by 2011 the chain had 122 stores and was named the fastest growing coffee chain in the US by CNBC. By 2013, this had increased even more to 172 stores.

It was in 2007 that the name of the company changed from “Beaner’s” to Biggby Coffee after discovering that the original name was a slang word and in fact an ethnic slur against Mexican people.
