Cornelian Cherry Fruit

A bright red and flavorful fruit, these are often used as decorations on cakes and cupcakes. They also make a good addition to salads or trail mix. They have a pretty white stone in the middle of them, which comes from the fact that they’re actually a type of pit (like cherries).

If you like cherries, you’ll love the taste of a cornelian cherry! I like to add them to pies and other desserts.

Citrofortunella Fruit

This is a type of Mandarin that’s smaller and more flavorful. They can be added to salad, or eaten as a snack. I like to think of Citrofortunella as a baby Mandarin. If a mandarin is too big, I’ll eat one of these instead.

It is found in the areas near Brasil and other places. It is a very rare fruit and is tree-fruited. That probably explains why it is so expensive.

Crowberry Fruit

Crowberries are a type of blueberry that’s native to Europe and Asia. They look like miniature blueberries, and they taste sweeter than their American relative. They are also very high in vitamin C.

I like them because they’re a rare fruit in the United States. Be sure to try this exotic fruit before it goes extinct!

Chokeberry Fruit

Chokeberries are very popular in this country, but they’re a very rare fruit in other parts of the world. They’re also called “Indian blackberry” because they were brought to the New World by Europeans.

They taste similar to blueberries, blueberries, cranberries and raspberries all mixed into one.

I like using chokeberries in pies because they give them an exciting tart taste.

Most people associate cranberries with Thanksgiving. However, cranberries are actually berries year-round! They are smaller than most berries, and they have a tangy taste that I love.

I like to add them to salads and sauces in addition to using them in typical holiday dishes like pies and breads.

This is a really delicious fruit that looks like an eyeball! When ripe, the clusters look like a face with tiny eyes and a mouth. They’re commonly used as decorations for cakes, but they’re also good to eat.

I like figs because they have a unique texture. While cutting into one, you get to eat the fleshy part (called the “pap) and then there’s chunky stuff in the middle that tastes sweet.

A coconut is a sweet, delicious fruit that comes from a coconut palm. There are two parts to the fruit: the shell and the inside. The shell is very hard, so it has to be cracked open with a hammer or a sharp object.

I like these fruits because they are fun to crack open! Then you’ll find another, smaller fruit inside called “the meat” or “the jelly”. Inside of that is the water of the coconut which is delicious to drink.

Cupuacu Fruit

This is a fruit that I found in São Paulo. It’s shaped like a chestnut, but sweeter and easier to peel. I love it because it’s a unique-tasting treat!

Capulin

 

This fruit looks just like a wild orange, but it tastes and smells like a grape. It’s sweet and tart and juicy, but can be tricky to peel because it has a tough rind. I think that capulins are good for people who don’t like cutting up the flesh of their fruit for eating, because you don’t have to remove the skin!

It is native to the United States. It is used to make jams, jellies, and juice. Its seeds are very small and edible, but it is best to remove them before eating.  I first tried them years ago when I was visiting a friend who had grown one in her garden.

Clementine Fruit

 

The clementine is a variety of mandarin oranges, which are believed to have been cultivated in China over 2000 years ago. The fruit is named after Pope Clement XI.

It has a pleasant fragrance, a sweet-tart taste, and the peel is easy to remove. A clementine’s skin can be very thin and easy to peel off in no time at all. It is best to eat this in the winter when it’s cold outside, as it might not taste as good if it’s warm from the sun!

Cherimoya Fruit

Cherimoya fruit is a creamy, buttery-textured tropical fruit that tastes like the best of mango, banana and pineapple. I love cherimoyas because they’re not too sweet, so I can eat a whole one myself and feel full with just one piece!

This fruit is native to the Andes Mountains in South America. Related to the bilimbi and the cashew, cherimoya is also called custard apple. I haven’t been able to find them at many grocery stores in the United States, so my family and I tend to buy them when we visit Ecuador.

Charichuelo

This fruit looks like a purple tomato, but it’s actually in the passion flower family. The charichuelo is a skinned, sweet, tropical fruit that tastes like pineapple. It is native to Latin America and has been cultivated in Ecuador for over 400 years.

I love this fruit because it’s very sweet and creamy on the inside, but it also has seeds on the outside of the fruit that contain lots of juice! Just cut them open and squeeze out all of their juice into a food processor or blender with some ice to make a shake for dessert!

Cherries are red, sweet, and tasty! They’re native to China, Japan, and North America. Cherries are the fruit of the cherry tree. The fruit comes in a variety of sizes with different color ranges. There’s even a whole new form of cherry called “Minneola,” which is dark red instead of orange or yellow.

Unlike apples and pears, cherries can be made into juice without any added sugar. I like eating cherries because they’re so sweet I can just pop them in my mouth.

This fruit grows in the form of a tree. It has three different kinds of berries that look like cocks combs. The berries are green and sweet when they’re fresh, but they change into red-purple when they ripen. They also have different flavors to match the different colors.

I think that this fruit is good because it’s associated with luck and superstition, as well as superstition beliefs about how two people should never share this same piece. It tastes like a mix of apple, pineapple and cinnamon, and it is very refreshing.

Chayote Fruit

Chayota is a white, pear-shaped fruit with a soft and spongy texture. It has green veins visible on the skin. The flesh color of the chayota is light green. Chayotas are eaten raw and are popular in salads or as a starchy vegetable. They can be prepared like potatoes or squash, and they taste like potatoes or squash!

This fruit is native to Mexico, Central America, and South America from Brazil to Peru. It is used as a vegetable or in soups. I think it’s good because it tastes similar to other vegetables that I love, but it also tastes like apples and pears!

Native to North America, the chokecherry is a sour, cherry-shaped berry that grows in a shrub. It grows on a bush and looks like an apple with red skin. It is used to make jam, jellies, and syrup because it has very high sugar content that makes it good for preserves.

This fruit is good because I love eating jam and jelly, but I also like making my own preserves at home!

This fruit is native to China and to Korea. It is used to make juice as well as preserves. I think it’s good because it’s good for making fresh juice when you lose your teeth!

The cashew apple is a small fruit that looks like an apple at first glance, but it has the shape of a cashew nut. It has rounder, more colorful skin than an apple and a softer crunch when sliced.

They also taste similar to green apples. Once you open them, you can eat the flesh, or you can put the whole thing in your mouth and chew on it like a nut. The cashew apple grows on a shrub called “caesalpinia bonducella” in Australia, where it’s often used as tinder for starting fires.

It is used in a lot of Indian sweets, like lassis or chaat. I use it in Indian curries and spicy recipe. If you are lucky enough to have a tree growing in your yard, you can use the leaves for tea. It is also used for herbal remedies.

Calamansi Fruit

The calamansi is a tiny citrus fruit that has a light and sweet taste. It’s native to the Philippines, where it is used in tropical drinks and desserts. Calamansi comes from the Tagalog word “calamansâ,” which means “lime” or “small lime.”

It looks like a small lime on the outside but has yellow pulp on the inside—and it tastes like a cross between lime, lemon, and mandarin orange, because of their size, you eat calamansis nearly whole. They are wonderful in fruit salads or in lemonade.

I really like cantaloupes because they tend to be bigger than honeydews (another favorite melon of mine) and have more flavor. Just make sure that the stem on your cantaloupe is green before you buy it!

It is easily recognizable because of its large size, which is why people call it “football melon.” There are two kinds of cantaloupe: the muskmelon, which has a little bit more variety in color, and is slightly sweeter, and the straight-sided cantaloupe. The straight-sided cantaloupe looks like a little eggplant—so cool looking!

Cucumber Fruit

Cucumbers are crisp, juicy fruits in the gourd family. They’re often used in salads and as dippers for spreads and dips. In fact, the word “cucumber” comes from the Arabic word for “cooler of the spirit.”

I love cucumbers because they’re cooling to the body and easy to eat. They also contain some skin-friendly vitamins and minerals. The thin skin on a cucumber allows for quick cooling, which is why it’s often used in salads and served with meals that are spicy or hot. Although I prefer my cucumbers unpeeled, I wouldn’t recommend buying them if they have thick or dark-colored skins.

If you’re looking for a delicious, healthy snack, try coco plum. It’s a tropical fruit that looks like a cross between a pineapple and an avocado. It also has large, smooth skin with small pits in it.

I enjoy coco plums because they taste juicy and sweet and aren’t too hard to eat! It is found in many different parts of the world, including South America, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands.

I love these fruits because they’re super sweet! Although I typically only eat them when they’re frozen, It is my favorite fruit. I also like the way they crunch! You can find them in the produce section at many supermarkets, and they’re also sold in specialty stores.

Cempedak Fruit

I love cempedak because it’s a sweet, delicious fruit—and it comes from Asia! This fruit looks like a round or heart-shaped gourd, and it has crisp, crunchy flesh inside.

Cempedak is also known as the “meat fruit” because it tastes a lot like cooked meat. I used to eat this fruit when I was younger, but now I usually grab them whenever I can find them in the market. It is found in Southeast Asia, Central and South America and the Pacific Islands.

Cape Gooseberry

These small, orange fruits are sweet and juicy. I really like how easy they are to eat, because the skin is very thin and the soft flesh is solid. The fruit itself doesn’t taste much like gooseberry—it tastes more like a cross between strawberry and watermelon. It’s also known as “açaí” in Brazil, where it is native.

It is found in the wild in South America and the Caribbean. This fruit is also sold by specialty stores and is very popular in South America.

Carob Fruit

Carob is actually a legume, not a fruit! This means that it doesn’t taste like any of the other fruits mentioned here. It’s packed with nutritious, heart-healthy fatty acids.

I like to use carob powder as an added sweetener in my shakes and smoothies. I also enjoy flavoring my homemade almond milk with carob powder, when I add it to my recipes instead of cocoa or vanilla extract

Calabashes are very perishable; they must be used within a week or two after purchasing them. A good rule of thumb is to use them up or eat them before they become too hard or dry out.
