In the Depression, if you found yourself without food, you wouldn’t go home hungry – you would find a place to fill up on a handful of Depression Cake. This is a traditional cake made with fruit and nuts. It’s also known as ‘fruitcake’ or ‘pessimist cake’ because it was made for Valentine’s day by those who couldn’t afford to buy anything else. I like this cake because it’s got a lot of flavor, and chewy fruit inside.
While this treat may not win any beauty contests, it’s still delicious. You can make a great dirt cake with any kind of fruit or nut filling. A classic is banana or strawberry. It is made with two layers of any cake – sometimes gingersnap or spice cake – and it’s filled with a dark chocolate pudding, topped with crumbly chocolate-covered cookies or graham crackers. You can mix in some coarsely chopped nuts on top.
In the city of Dundee, Scotland, local bakers created a nutty treat called a Dundee Cake. It’s a rich fruit cake with almonds, currants and candied peel. The icing is spread with marmalade before baking to create an orange layer that sits atop the cake. This treat became popular around 1913. Now it’s baked commercially as well as homemade. I like to think of it as a Scottish upside-down cake. It is delicious any time of the year.
Devil’s Food Cake
A devil’s food cake is a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. The devil’s food chocolate cake recipe gets its name from the chocolate used. Dark cocoa powder gives the cake an intense chocolate flavor.I love that this recipe has both white and brown sugar, because each provides its own special tastes to the final product. Dark cocoa powder will give you a darker, more bittersweet taste than regular cocoa powder does, so you may need to add more sugar than the recipe calls for.
A Danish pastry is a buttery type of pastry with a custard or fruit filling. It’s a tasty treat, and is often eaten with coffee or tea. It’s fun to eat because it’s pretty and round, so watch out – these pastries might be addictive! I do indulge in these tasty treats, but I watch my portion size.

It’s got a lot of chocolate in it, so two slices will really satisfy your craving. It’s a great way to satisfy dark chocolate cravings. It’s also good for those who like their desserts sweet, but not super sweet: the ratio between chocolate cake and cream is about 3:1. Its one of my favorite desserts for kids, but also for adults.
Dumplings are so delicious. You can have them with salty soup or sweet sauce, but the best way to serve them is with a sweet filling. These dessert dumplings are filled with chocolate and topped with strawberries. Once your child has mastered the techniques, let him or her create their own signature dessert.
The Kentucky Derby is a famous horse race in Kentucky. It’s famous for the hats the people wear, but it’s also famous for a specific kind of dessert – Derby Pie! This dessert is a lot like chess pie and pecan pie, but it’s got some interesting spices that give this pie its special flavor. This recipe has honey which gives it a very distinctive flavor, unlike any other pie I’ve ever tasted!
