History
It was founded in 1952 by Johnson Kam and Eddie Flores, Jr. Their first location was in Honolulu, Hawaii while their first U.S. mainland location can be found in California.
L&L Hawaiian Barbecue currently has around 200 locations in the United States and Japan. They are part of the top 500 franchises ranked by Entrepreneur magazine.
Review
The restaurant is set up to look similar to a fast-food one. Its decor is reminiscent of the retro island look of Hawaiian food shacks.
Since it was built around the concept of the Hawaiian plate lunch, expect carbohydrate-heavy meals. They were able to incorporate Asian and American tastes into their food quite well.
Must-tries are the beef combo plate, seafood combo, loco moco, and chicken katsu musubi. Each plate comes with macaroni salad and rice so you’re all set for a filling meal.
You simply order your food at the counter and have it delivered to your table. I didn’t have to wait long for my freshly cooked order — only 10-15 minutes.
