On the Border Mexican Grill and Cantina is a casual dining restaurant. They are the largest casual Tex-Mex restaurant chain in the country. They are known for their sizzling fajitas and their selection of margaritas. Their passion is sharing their love of Mexican food, spirits and a great deal of fun.
The dishes are inspired by the cuisines of South Texas and Mexico. Their happy hour specials and patio dining have drawn people in for decades. History
Over thirty years ago, three guys, with the help of some tequila, came up with the idea to share Border-style food with the world. In October of 1982, the first restaurant opened on the corner of Knox and Travis in Dallas, Texas. They remained a wholly owned subsidiary until 2009 when they merged with Brinker International.
The next year, they were sold to Golden Gate Capital. Four years after that, Golden Gate Capital sold them to Border Holdings, an affiliate of the Argonne Capital Group. They admired the brand’s unique menu and atmosphere and wanted to expand the chain nationwide. They worked with the existing management to do just that.
In 2014, Ward Whitman was named CEO of the company. He has vast experience in the industry. Whitman knows the value of brand recognition, operations discipline, and he has a clear vision for success. He is known for his dedication and being an excellent team leader. He is always willing to take on a challenge.
Today, there are over 160 locations. They span over the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea. They are still headquartered in Dallas, Texas. They are looking to experienced multi-unit restaurant owners and operators to help in their mission of bringing Border-style food to as many neighborhoods as they can.
Review
Appetizers start at about $5 and stay under $13. The Border Sampler with chicken quesadillas, steak nachos, chicken flautas, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, and queso is a great way to get a few different tastes at once. Soups and salads start at around $4 and remain under $12. The Sizzling Fajita Salad, with either chicken or steak makes a great meal.
Enchiladas and tacos range between around $10 to $12. They also offer burritos and chimichangas. The fajita grill allows the customer to create their own combinations. Border Bowls are served over cilantro lime rice with steak, chick, Portobello mushroom, or shrimp – all for under $11. There are so many delicious items to choose from.
For those who cannot decide, there is the Border Combo portion of the menu or the Create Your Own Combo. Both offer popular Tex-Mex favorites on one dish for less than $15. For those watching calories, there is a Border Smart portion that offers items containing 590 calories or less. Each item has a calorie count.
There is a separate lunch menu and kid’s menu, and they offer sides, add-ons, and desserts. The drink selection is full of beers, wine, margaritas, and specialty drinks.
